Photo of the Week

Our photo of the week was captured by photographer Seth J Dewey! Seth wrote, “Third times the charm. Finally got a decent shot of the comet NEOWISE. From downtown no less!” Did you know that there is a comet passing earth, that can be seen with the naked eye this week? Comet NEOWISE will be closest to Earth on July 23rd. Between now and then, you can find the comet in the sunset sky approaching the Big Dipper from below. It is visible to the naked-eye from dark sky sites, and extra-beautiful through binoculars.
Do you have some great pictures of our vibrant Downtown you’d like to show off? Post them to our Facebook page, or send them to us by email! We love to share images that capture the beauty and excitement of Downtown Nashua.

TAKE A BREAK AND ENJOY SOME GARDEN BEAUTY!

Enjoy some local beauty on the
Symphony NH Garden Tour
3–7 pm Sunday, July 19
Friends of Symphony New Hampshire will present its annual Garden Tour this Sunday, from 3–7 pm. Four Nashua gardens will be open for viewing and will feature very distinct styles:
  • a bonsai garden
  • an Asian-inspired garden
  • a lushly planted garden filled with uncommon perennial and tree specimens
  • a backyard oasis with plunge pool and waterfall at woodland’s edge.
The event will also include a plant sale at home #3.
Donations for entry are greatly appreciated (cash or check only). All proceeds benefit Symphony NH’s Move NH Music Forward campaign. Even though musicians are not currently on stage, the 97-year-strong organization is working hard to maintain performance standards until we all can be safely back in concert halls.
There is no need to reserve a spot or purchase a ticket beforehand. Simply begin at any of the homes in whatever order you would like. They will accept your donation at each home and provide you a wristband to show at the others that you have paid.
All homes are located in Nashua:
Garden #1:   9 Cheyenne Drive (Carol and Sean Duffy)
Garden #2:   59 Cheyenne Drive (Carolyn Choate)
Garden #3:   11 Brackenwood Drive (Barb Young)
Garden #4:   11 Governors Lane (Kathleen and Michael Munster)

Nashua Farmers Market
Open every Sunday, 10 am–2 pm
Great American Downtown is very pleased to say the Nashua Farmers Market is in full swing!
With good social distancing in mind, and to accommodate as many vendors as possible, this season we will be operating on three sides of City Hall (229 Main Street) with lots of space between vendors (map shown above), a requirement for all to wear masks, a one-way flow of foot traffic and other health and safety measures.
This location for the 2020 season is conveniently located next to the Elm Street Parking Garage, which has free parking on all levels daily after 5 pm, as well as all day Saturdays and Sundays!
Vendor list and more information on safety practices can be found by clicking below. We can’t wait to see you all again!

MEET YOUR LOCAL VENDORS!
CosMom ConShop is a one-stop online retail store meeting the needs of the growing cosplay community.
Cosplayers spend a lot of time and money shopping online for the wide range of materials they need. They need to seek out numerous types of specialty stores to obtain the necessary supplies, including online shops in China and Japan that are often difficult to use. This leads to increased shipping fees and wait times.
Come meet them at the Farmers Market this Sunday, and check out all their fun gear!

CATCH A DOCUMENTARY ON OUR RIVER!

The Merrimack: River at Risk
Documentary premieres on PBS July 23
The Merrimack River is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in America. During the 19th century, mills in cities such as Nashua, Manchester and Lowell harnessed the power of the river to become the largest manufacturing plants in the world. Like many rivers in America, the Merrimack was heavily polluted as a result of industrial growth.
Can we save it? The Clean Water Act of 1972 helped clean it up considerably. Remarkably, more than 80 percent of the Merrimack watershed is still undeveloped and largely forested. However, in 2016, it was named one of the most endangered rivers in the United States by the nonprofit American Rivers.
The Merrimack: River at Risk premieres on Thursday, July 23 on New Hampshire PBS, Channel 11.
Hosted by conservationist and New Hampshire native Leah Hart, the documentary spotlights the threats the river and the watershed face now and in the future. From water treatment professionals to river guides to community builders, Hart interviews people who know what’s at stake if towns and communities don’t work together to protect the river and the forests that surround it.

NONPROFIT OF THE WEEK

Nashua Community Music School
The mission of the Nashua Community Music School is to provide a broad spectrum of learning, performing and listening opportunities in music with the finest teachers available.
This 35 year-old nonprofit, located in the historic Nashua Millyard, offers music education opportunities for all ages, including:
  • private music lessons (this year offered as remote lessons)
  • group classes for young kids and for teens
  • ensembles
  • music therapy (offered virtually at this time), and
  • a full roster of musical summer day camps – this year offered as virtual camps.
In addition to these on-site and remote-learning programs, NCMS also offers a variety of traveling music workshops, professional concerts, multicultural enrichment programs and on-site music instruction options that expand the musical arts programs of local schools, organizations, and the general public through our Music Outreach Program. They also offer music opportunities through Nashua Parks & Rec’s summer camps.
In a time where arts programs are being cut and underfunded, The Nashua Community Music School Music Outreach Program strives to fill the gaps in the current music education system and promote broader awareness and accessibility of the benefits of making artistic experiences a valuable part of life. The school offers scholarships as well.
The school is looking to hire a piano instructor in July. Apply here.
Nashua Community Music School is at 5 Pine Street Extension, Mill Annex #6. Read more about lessons and programs on their webpage, follow them on Facebook, call them at (603) 881-7030 or send an email to [email protected].
