DOWNTOWN NASHUA

OUR HISTORY

Our Story: The Evolution of Downtown Advocacy in Nashua

Downtown Nashua has always been more than just a collection of buildings and businesses. It’s a place where neighbors meet, traditions are passed down, and community pride takes shape. For decades, we have been honored to play a role in supporting, promoting, and celebrating downtown Nashua, work that continues today through the Downtown Nashua Association, formerly known as Great American Downtown.

Our story is one of collaboration, resilience, and a shared belief that a strong downtown is essential to a strong city.

Early Roots: Supporting Downtown Before 1986

Long before we became a formally incorporated nonprofit, Nashua’s downtown advocates were already at work. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the rise of shopping malls and big box stores meant downtowns across New England faced economic shifts, changing retail patterns, and declining foot traffic. Nashua was no exception.

During this period, local business owners, civic leaders, and city partners came together to explore ways to strengthen and revitalize the downtown. These early efforts were often coordinated through a downtown-focused development entity, sometimes referred to as a Downtown Development Corporation, created to align merchants, property owners, and city leadership around a shared goal: keeping downtown Nashua active, viable, and welcoming.

These grassroots collaborations laid the foundation for everything that followed.

Formal Incorporation: Great American Downtown (1986–1987)

To give downtown advocacy a lasting and sustainable structure, Great American Downtown, Inc. was formally incorporated as a New Hampshire nonprofit on December 12, 1986. The following year, the organization received federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, allowing us to expand our capacity, pursue funding, and serve the community more effectively.

This step marked an important turning point. Incorporation gave downtown advocates a permanent home, one that could organize events, support businesses, and act as a consistent voice for downtown Nashua.

A Renewed Focus: Reorganization in the Early 2000s

By the early 2000s, it was clear that downtown Nashua needed renewed energy and visibility. When the city was not accepted into the National Main Street Program, local leaders chose not to step back, but instead to step forward.

In 2002, we reorganized and refocused Great American Downtown as a homegrown downtown revitalization organization. With support from the City of Nashua, the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce, downtown businesses, and community partners, we embraced a clear mission:
to bring people downtown, support local businesses, and create experiences that reflect Nashua’s unique character.

This period marked the beginning of many programs and traditions that residents now recognize as essential parts of downtown life.

Our Mission and Purpose

At our core, we exist to strengthen downtown Nashua through collaboration, creativity, and community-driven programming. We work to:

  • Support small businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Increase foot traffic and visibility downtown
  • Create inclusive, family-friendly events
  • Foster arts, culture, and diversity
  • Serve as a connector between residents, businesses, artists, and the City

Everything we do is rooted in the belief that downtown thrives when people feel welcome, engaged, and invested.

Signature Events That Bring Us Together

Over the years, we have developed and stewarded events that have become part of Nashua’s shared identity, including:

  • The Nashua Farmers Market, connecting residents with local farms and makers
  • Taste of Downtown, celebrating Nashua’s diverse culinary scene
  • The Winter Stroll, a seasonal tradition that brings thousands downtown
  • Arts, music, and cultural programming that showcase local talent

These events do more than entertain. They create memories, support livelihoods, and remind us why downtown matters.

Partnerships and Community Impact

None of this work happens alone. Our success has always depended on strong partnerships, with downtown businesses, artists, volunteers, city departments, nonprofits, and residents who care deeply about this community.

We are proud to serve as a convener and collaborator, helping align shared goals and amplify the voices of those who call Nashua home. Together, we’ve helped transform downtown into a destination for shopping, dining, culture, and connection.

Evolving Into the Downtown Nashua Association

As our role expanded, so did our identity. To better reflect the scope of our work and the community we serve, we began operating publicly as the Downtown Nashua Association in 2026.

While our name evolved, our mission did not. We remain grounded in decades of downtown advocacy, carrying forward the spirit and purpose that began long before our incorporation.

Looking Ahead

Today, we continue to build on this legacy, adapting to new challenges, embracing new ideas, and staying rooted in community needs. As downtown Nashua grows and changes, we remain committed to ensuring it stays vibrant, inclusive, and locally driven.

Downtown Nashua’s story is still being written, and we’re proud to be part of it.
