Gerald Charles Dickens brings a holiday classic to life

Gerald Charles Dickens is the great-great-grandson of exactly whom you think. Since 2009, this Dickens has been touring the United States, performing his one-man show of that other Dickens’ beloved work, A Christmas Carol. He’s come to Nashua for many years, performing to sold-out audiences every time. If you’ve had the opportunity to attend one of these shows, you know how engaging, talented, and utterly charming he is, as a storyteller and actor.

Being stymied in 2020 by the global pandemic, Gerald could not bring his tour to the States. Undeterred, he created something he’d wanted for awhile: A filmed version of his dynamic one-man presentation of A Christmas Carol, enhanced for the viewer with the addition of the sumptuous countryside and historic buildings in his home country.

As always for Nashuans, Fortin Gage Flower & Gift Shop is the local ticket source for Dickens’ show. This year, instead of seeing him in person, you can purchase viewing rights for the video version of this one-man tour de force. Streaming through Dec. 31, A Christmas Carol is available for your family to enjoy as many times as you like within 7 days of your $20 purchase of the access link, on the Fortin Gage website here.

This remarkable production, just over an hour that flies by, has Dickens portraying all 26 characters in his great-great-grandfather’s timeless tale of metamorphosis and redemption. From narrator to Ebenezer Scrooge to even Tiny Tim, Dickens spins and seamlessly segues from person to person, through vocal inflections and physicality. He smoothly and dramatically weaves the story we all know by heart, but with the compelling singularity of one performer. Add to Dickens’ magnetic presence a multitude of settings in the beguiling English town of Rochester, and we are transported back in time, with nary a phone wire or vehicle to be found. There’s beautiful, sweeping cinematography by Emily Walder, and a haunting score.

We can’t recommend strongly enough the life-affirming experience of watching this unique presentation of A Christmas Carol. He is an engaging enough actor without, but having the additional connection of being a descendant of the great author, Gerald Charles Dickens brings a familiar story to life in a wonderful new way.

What a perfect gift for family to come together, at home or virtually, to hear and watch the Christmas classic as only a Dickens can tell it! Don’t miss this charming show; get your link with Fortin Gage before the month is out!
